I love Sundays. I've always loved Sundays. Even when I spent 3 hours in church beginning at 8am, I loved Sundays.

Volleyball at the beach (thanks Max!), NFL Football, the running club I found last year, golf's final day, NASCAR, or recuperating from chasing Womack all over the field. Sunday always has something (or nothing) great to enjoy.

It took Sheree's comment to make me realize just how much I take Sundays for granted. She said this morning, "I can't believe I don't have anything to do. No papers to write, no online work, nothing!"

I hope that today brings us a whole lot of nothing...

NetGuide Web Awards 2003: "WINNER: www.publicaddress.net
Judge's Comments: A good blog has a pleasing visual aesthetic. It provides useful and interesting information to the outsider, but it is infused with the personality of the blogger who creates it. It is a cathartic release for the writer, but it never degrades into self indulgent poetic drivel. It should be a part of the Internet, and not a black hole that stands alone. Many of the finalists achieve some of these goals, but I selected www.publicaddress.net because it provides a window into several blogs, each with personality and intelligence. There's something there for everyone. "

I guess I should be driving my efforts more towards this.

Barry thinks that Matt's idea deserves more prominent exposure. So, here, for the interweb:

KFC should give up on this chicken thing and just focus on the biscuits

258948 - Cmd.exe Shortcut Does Not Have Same "Run as" Behavior as Command Line: "SYMPTOMS
When you use the Run as command from a Microsoft default shortcut whose Start in value is set to '%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%' (a common default for shortcuts created by Windows 2000), the command does not work and generates a 'The directory name is invalid' error message. This can occur if the primary user's account has a home folder that is mapped from a server share, on which the secondary user (usually the local administrator) does not have privileges. "

Matt found this, either intuitively, or with the Google search I should have done. Now I can use WinXP to compmgmt.msc using my non-admin account, enter my admin account credentials, and manage any of the servers. This will save at least 4min per week, well under the time it has taken me to complete this blog entry. Indeed, what hath god wrought?

Ankle Sprains: Healing and Preventing Injury -- familydoctor.org: "How do I wrap a sprained ankle?
Start by cutting out a horseshoe-shaped pad from 1 x 4- to 3 x 8-inch-thick felt. Put this pad around the outside of your ankle joint on both sides of your foot, with the open end facing up. "

Sheree sprained her ankle a bit in tonight's game (we lost, which would have been more tolerable if I hadn't served into the net at 3-8 in the final game to 11). Since the swelling didn't double the size of her foot, I haven't been as compassionate as her cries of pain should warrant. I should be more considerate.

One of the other team had an ice pack, which according to the above site and others, is good to apply quickly. I wrapped her ankle twice tonight before reading the above instructions. Once around a ziploc bag, once for compression.

Couldn't quickly find why it's bad to ice for more than 20 min. Oh wait - looks like tissue damage.

Do-it-yourself: Stop junk mail, email and phone calls
The amount of paper junk mail sent each year in the USA is staggering -- some 4 million tons, nearly half of which is never opened. Even if you recycle there are still enormous environmental costs in terms of ink, energy to produce deliver and recycle the paper, recycling inefficiencies and loss of virgin forest to create the high quality glossy paper much junk mail uses. There is a lot you can do to reduce the cost to the environment and your own time:

Great information on how to get less junk snail mail.

I have a dream that the only mail that comes to my house is:
1) Letters to me & my housemates.
2) Bills that are not otherwise received electronically
3) Rare, RARE advertisements for the exact types of products I purchase. Costco does a good job of this.

I do not like: ClosetWorld. PennySaver. Charter Communications. Mortgage/Refinance offers. Gardening/Construction offers.

Still no change from Yahoo's when compared to Adelphia. I'll send them another email now. What a colossal waste of time. (which reminds me of an entertaining blog from a technophile - cwob.com)

A life in bits and bytes Newsmakers CNET News.com: "Consider a future device for individual use%2C which is a sort of mechanized private file and library"

How much information (email, contacts, knowledge) do I have? How much do I want to keep? What about websites i've visited? Phone conversations? A video camera strapped to my head. It's all going to be available. Who keeps it private? How about 1024-bit encryption? Time for some research...

CNN.com - Bush calls for ban on same-sex marriages - Feb. 25 2004: "President Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment Tuesday that would restrict marriage to two people of the opposite sex but leave open the possibility that states could allow civil unions. "

What a fascinating political debate. This says that about 60% of Americans would favor such an amendment, up from 55% in Dec '03.

The US Constitution, Article 5, requires 67%. This should be fun to watch...

I found this with a GOOG search for 'ingrown toenail'

What an amazing PAIN you've discovered! I guess I should soak it again in the morning. And change the cotton. I've cut back to biting/picking two fingernails - right thumb and left pinky. If I could leave the big toes alone I'll never have to endure this again. Dad suggests dealing with the emotions that cause the nailpicking. I think just find a more productive outlet. This is an entertaining exchange about this riddle:
There is a bull charging into an abyss. The horns go in; the head goes in; the
front legs go in; the torso and hind legs go in. But, that tail, it just won't
go in. Why?

I found it at Google Answers

Hello Brett,

I'm sorry about your head. The source of the "bull story" is the Wu-men-kuan (Jap. Mumonkan), lit. "the Gateless Gate"; one of the two most important koan collections of Ch'an (Zen) literature. It was compiled by the Chinese Ch'an (Zen) master Wu-men Hui-k'ai (Jap. Mumon Ekai). Koans (Jap., lit. "public notice") in Chinese Kung-an are paradoxical "riddles" given to students of Ch'an (Zen) meditation by a master for the purpose of aiding the student's progress toward enlightenment. While they are often humorous and interesting, their purpose is considered sacred by Zen Buddhists. By searching for an answer to the Koan it is hoped that the student is propelled beyond the conceptual/logical mind into the "original mind" or "Buddha-nature". There are many koans and, generally, a student's progress is helped by gaining skill at opening the mind into increasing clarity through "solving" koans of greater and greater difficulty.

There are many helpful books on the subject of koans. Your local bookstore probably has several. Or, Amazon.com is another good source.

Best,
Gene Kelly

P.S. I thought you may be one of my new students for the fall semester. That's the reason for the "Prof." earlier. Sorry.

Prof. Kelly-
My answer to you should tell you who I am.

Only the stick can tell us what it is.

I went to Caltech from '95 to '99 and this convoluted thinking makes my head hurt.

What's the source of the bull/tail/abyss story?

Please!!!

Well, now that you know "who" I am, who are you? If you can answer that question, you will understand the answer to the riddle.

A teacher holds up a stick and says to his disciples: "Quick, tell me what this is. If you tell me it is a stick, you deny its nature. If you tell me it's not a stick you deny the fact."

Feel free to write back Brett,

I found it in a random Google Answers search a while back, and I figured out who you were.

Hospital violence

I think back to why I started volunteering at Huntington Hospital. Part of it was the girls I might meet. Part of it was that Gina worked there for a while. Much of it was that it's just 300 yards from 757 S. Raymond (but I still drive almost every Tuesday). Oh, and part of it was the bit Matthew Modine did in Gross Anatomy. Mostly, I just want some good karma points.

I never thought I would be afraid for my life.

Yesterday I experienced what Kevin Costner's character in Tin Cup would call a 'defining moment'. A young woman walked through the front doors and towards the elevators. I was reading the magazine, so if i noticed it, I did so subconsciously.

Twelve long seconds later, a young man darted through the front doors and sprinted towards the elevators. Weird, I thought, he could just yell to her. Maybe he was worried that she would not notice him. I've been in similar situations. He was quick, so I couldn't go back to US News & World Report without seeing what was going on sixty feet to my right.

Now sixty feet is quite a ways for someone with keratoconus, and no corrective lenses. But as he approached her, I could see her begin to cower. I could hear him shouting angrily. He swung with his right fist. She was quick, and pulled away. He swung again, this time with a left that landed squarely on her neck and jaw. Thud. What a sound. I've seen fights in grade school. Calum bitch-slapped me and everyone else on the rugby team, but it was always funny. This was hard. I was in shock. "Stop!!!" A voice inside me did not yell.

A thousand thoughts rushed through my head. Adrenaline surged through my body. Never hit a friend. Don't hit a girl. Never use physical violence. This was wrong on so many levels, and I froze. What if he had a gun? What would I do? Would i really fight this guy over a girl I don't know? What if he had a knife? Damn, I should have paid better attention when Greg and Max were teaching those CQC moves.

She was still on her feet, which was remarkable given how hard he hit her. He swung again, and she went down. He was yelling but I couldn't understand him. She was yelling, probably saying, "Stop!!!" x5282. Security. Get someone to the Main Lobby now. I remember saying. They have a badge, but not a gun. I remember thinking. I was standing up now, starting to move out of my cubicle. He was gaining some semblance of composure, if such a gangbanger ever could in a hospital lobby.

She skulked back out of the hospital, and away from the white Monte Carlo with tinted windows. After some yelling, I couldn't believe she got in his car. A nurse informed me their baby was in the back seat. She had their home address, she told the security officer who arrived 90 seconds after the car squealed out of the dropoff area. He instructed her to call the police, and report the incident. A black & white would be dispatched, and hopefully he would be at least a little bit concerned. Hopefully the young woman wouldn't get it again.

I gave the nurse my name, address, phone number, and began to sulk over my inability to act. Maybe Womack or Greg or Max can tell me what is the best thing to do, should I ever find myself in that situation again. I don't know. I don't want to stew over this anymore. When a defining moment comes along, you define the moment, or the moment defines you.

I wish I could know her story. And maybe his. I wish I could talk to her, tell her about her rights. I wish he could learn the errors of his ways (as I see them). I wish I knew 1/2 of the takedown moves Greg knows. I wish this world were a better place.

Now I'm tired, and I have to think of something a little more uplifting before I go to sleep. Now if my damn girlfriend wouldn't shut the hell up, I wouldn't have to beat her down again. That was funny in my head.

I love her. She makes me happy. Tomorrow I can make up for Tuesday's inaction. Tomorrow I will do a lot.

I don't see many people disagree with you. And a few of them seem intelligent. I don't mean to stir up the choice/life debate. I only hope that science (true science, not using a sample size of one to make universal arguments) can make the discussion more thorough.

$50/year thecrew.smugmug.com
---Shared with many friends. Unlimited storage plus 2GB bandwidth per month.
$30/year mom/dad.smugmug.com
---Maybe one of the sibs will pick up next year
$30/year yahoo plus
---I get 1 GB email storage + photo and briefcase space. Yahoo is getting greedy.
$10/year active-domain
---Excellent interface & service
$12/year cheapweb.us
---A great intro to web hosting.
$480/year Champion
---Altrio's replacement, Pasadena cable-modem. I should look for something better.
$20/year should be enough for all but home access. Domain name plus sharing hosting and smugmug costs.

Barry is teaching me style sheets. My head is full of semi colons and curly braces. www.devguru.com is broken, otherwise we would have made some of the thumbnails on vertabrett.com a little more embellished with some wavy borders.

He spent over an hour getting Debian to start its install after some haxors took down Jenna, right as I started to get more involved with my web page. Since he hosts Matt's & Dylan's pages there, too, I got frustrated with my inability to link to the active webpage of a friend.

My head is spinning with this digital question. I've shared it with Matt G. & Sheree, so it's time to put down something a little more tangible. Poker's coming up in a couple days, so maybe I can get this bet started then.

When will technological advances enable a single device to simplify these five aspects of daily life?

A <$399.99 cell phone that
1) Make a call to another country
2) Open an Excel document from a VPN-protected company internet
3) Start a car with factory or <$150 after-market remote ignition capability
4) Open a <$99 home door lock
5) Pay a charge at a merchant

Integrating 3, 4, and 5 will be hurdles in the years to come. Technology exists for each today, when will one common device do all of these?
3) The factory-install is from a top-10 (by # sold) automaker. After market costs include $50/hour installation.
4) The door lock does not include installation charges
5) The merchant can be any Fortune 1000 company. Prices in US$.

My guess is August 10, 2006. Recording a bet will cost $1. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd closest will receive 50%, 33%, 17% of the total pool.

Betting will close October 10, 2004. My goal is 1000 bets. Results to be posted at Brett Tolman's http://www.vertabrett.com

Yahoo! Local - Find businesses and services near you.
Yahoo! has come out with its Local search, which seems to be a slight improvement over Google's version . I submitted a couple of reviews, for Goldstein's and for Monty's, I wonder if/how they'll be included.

To compare, I ran a quick search for 'steak restaurants' in 'Pasadena, CA', and Google's results had a sponsored link from Mapquest, replacing 'restaurants' with 'houses', and gave the excellent listings:
1) JJ's
2) Arroyo chop House
3) Monty's

This compares to Google's fair
1) Shogun
2) JJ's
3) The Steak House in Bell Gardens
and Yahoo's poor
1) Monty's
2) Sizzler
3) Frank's Steak House in Burbank.

Check out my nifty table made by manually typing from Adelphia, importing from Yahoo to Excel, then pasting to Notepad before adding to my email.

Loads of fun.

Why didn't I just link Betty and Sam from Yahoo! to Adelphia's web channel listing?
How much time is this really worth? Not this much.

With some brainstorming help from Jason, I learned that I can probably point my 'active-domain' account from there to wherever I host the site (Barry's, DynamicDNS, whatever). Time to make some phone calls.

My Webpage=
Domain Name ($10/year from AD)
+
DNS Services (name servers?)
+
Hosting (good luck finding a cheap place)

Why bother with Network Solutions or Register.com at $30/yr or more PLUS name server costs PLUS Hosting costs when you can get all but hosting for $10/yr from Active Domain?

Guess I need to do some hosting research.

Thank you for your payment

I wonder how the above link will work in a few months - I guess I'm a bit suprised it worked just now. I just bought vertabrett.com from activedomain.com. $10/year for up to 5 years; $9/year for 6-10 years.
It took me a couple minutes to find that deal... (look at this excel paste):
Domain - 1yr 3yrs 5yrs
Register.com $35 $32 $30
active-domain $10 $10 $10
directnic $15 $15 $15
CHEAPDOMAINNAMES $7.85 $7.85 $7.85
luckyregister $7.85 $7.85 $7.85

I'm hoping Barry will hook me up with a deal to store some pages at www.decreation.com.

10:10am local time; I spent the last 18minutes compiling a list of music channels that were off by one when compared to Adelphia's cable listing. Sam from yahoo requested this in order to 'expedite' the change. Let's see how long this takes...

Digital information.
Watching the 'Music' channels from Sheree's house in Placentia, and I go online to Yahoo's TV site. Jazz is listed as '430', so I go there. It plays 'Blues'. Hmmm... This is the 21st century, and I hope that more people expect the same thing I do: Digital information should be more immediate, more automatic.

I emailed Yahoo's support, which as usual, is quick to reply. Betty says: "I have have looked into the accuracy of the channel line-up in your areaand compared it to the listing shown by your channel provider. At this time, the channels appear to match. If you still see an inconsistency, please reply, and indicate the specific channels that are not accurate.Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Customer Care."
I reply that the problem is there not only for channel 430, but that every music channel is off by 1. August 1 it's wrong at Yahoo. Let's see how long they take to fix it.
