125 ways to eat toast

The AP (through CBS news) says that a healthy diet includes three servings of whole grain a day.

With so many ways to eat toast, such a goal could be that much easier.

Overheard in Pasadena

"Maybe we could talk about sex!"

"Haven't you had enough?!?"

Diagnose Me, Dr. Frist!

Boingboing pointed me to this post at PersonalDemocracy.

So I uploaded to flickr one of Sheree's great shots of my thumb showing the button and pin holding it together:

Vegetarian Diet for Athletes.

Vegetarian Diet for Exercise and Athletic Training and Performing: An Update

An increasing number of athletes are adopting vegetarian diets for ecological, economic, religious, health and ethical reasons. Vegetarian diets (except possibly fruitarian and strict macrobiotic diets) can easily meet the nutritional requirements of all types of athletes provided they contain a variety of plant-foods. Go'ing past Chess

After Slashdot's frontpage post a couple weeks ago of a program that had solved 5x5 Go, I started to learn more about this ancient game. More complex than Chess, it has yet to be dominated by supercomputers. Deep Blue beat Kasparov in Chess a few years back, but the best computer has yet to do very well against even an intermediate Go player.

I remember my friend from second grade Jonathan Pillow teaching me the game Pente on a board used for Go. I caught up with him this year, a couple decades later, and I look forward to some handicapped Go games (impossible with Chess) against him.

The #2 result after Googling "play go" (in quotes) is excellent. After three terrible games today (username applecore), my ranking is 18kyu. Not very good.

Calcium supplements

Yesterday's X-ray showed what Dr. Laster called a 'bony gamekeeper'. It's actually Gamekeeper's or Skier's thumb. The ligament pulled a bone fragment from the proximal phalanx.

I like the use of the word 'harpoon' - I guess it goes under my skin - at this page Sheree found.

If three weeks pass before surgery, this excellent webpage warns of increased incidence of weakness and pain on pinch grasp.

My lowly CSC insurance doesn't cover one of the best hand surgeons in Southern California, R. Clark Davis, M.D., so I have an appointment tomorrow at 9am with USC's Dr. Stevanovic, and with some luck, a surgery-free weekend!
