This morning 120 people worked at CMS. Tonite it's 65.

What a tough day for a lot of people. How do you console those on their way to a rough couple of weeks (months?)?

My belief is that a change like this is a blessing in disguise for most people. I hope time proves me right. A good friend of mine once called me a 'feet-lander'. I believe that comment is more applicable to the human race. Darwin had some theories about this I think. Adaptation is a very strong trait, and the fact that we are here, breathing, reading this, is testament to an inner strength that has kept evolution going strong for millions of years.

Maybe sometimes it takes a big jolt like this to spur people to take a big step towards improving their lives.

My previous layoff education has been insufficient. Many smart people lost their jobs today. Many hard-working people lost their jobs today. And some of them were both. While a fortunate set of circumstances let me keep mine. And I'm lazy. And not that smart in what I do.

I hope I can learn a lot from this.

Hi! This is Ro. I just checked my mail and got all those friendster requests last week while at a conference in SF, so I'm catching up. I'll read back in your blog a bit to see how things are going for you. I have a blog, but it's just about knitting. I'm too much in the academic job search right now to have anything very personal on the web.
